Rule number one, art licensing is a business.

Throughout your licensing career, you will meet some amazing people. You will connect and build relationships with them. You will build trust. However, remember, art licensing is a business. As long as your art is selling products for them, they will keep working with you, but if the sales of your licensed products decline, don’t be surprised if they stop working with you. The key is to not take it personal.

There must be trust on the part of both licensee and licensor. They trust you to provide them art in a timely manner and you trust them to sell the product and pay your royalty on time. You are business partners in a sense so there has to be trust.

Over the past 18 years of licensing my art, I have made a few mistakes…..ok, more than a few, but from each one I gained knowledge and experience. In this video, I share my experience with my first licensee and how that relationship taught me a valuable lesson about business.

Thinking back on this experience, I almost laugh at my naivety. There are many glaring signs that point to my licensee as the infringers upon my rights as an artist. At the time, had I taken my feelings and emotions out of the equation and looked at this logically from a business point of view, I would have seen it.

Lesson learned, my friends. I hope you can learn from my mistake.

Your Social Media Profile Pictures are as Important to Your Business Identity as Your Logo.

What do people see when they come to your website, Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin or Google+ page, or better yet what do they think when they see your photo? You’ve all heard the saying, you only get one chance to make a first impression. It’s never been more true than with social media. People can decide in an instant whether or not they want to stay on your page and read your content simply from looking at your profile photo. An inviting photo with a warm friendly smile will certainly draw visitors in before a photo with a frown, avatar (graphical representation) or logo. Visitors to your site want to get to know YOU, the person behind the business.

Social media is all about connecting with others. A friendly smile and good eye contact are just a couple important tips I share in episode #2. I also show some "do’s and don’ts" in order to help you take engaging photos. If you’d like to see how my profile pictures are similar but different poses, check them out at these sites……website, facebook, twitter.

Note: In the video I mention that it’s been 1 1/2 years since I’ve updated my profile pictures. While I haven’t changed much, I am thinking it may be time for me to take my own advice and get them updated! Adding it to my to-do list

Good luck to you in your quest to take some great photos of yourself and remember, have fun with it!
